From Corporate Grind to Creative Mastermind: A Freelance Copywriter’s Entrepreneurial Adventure

Kevin The Copywriter Singapore

Thoughts From a Freelance Copywriter and Solopreneur

Driven by a passion for autonomy and fulfilment, Kevin Lim embarked on his entrepreneurial journey to shape his own career and financial destiny. Energised by the idea of breaking free from the confines of corporate employment, he sought a path where he could fully leverage his love for writing and storytelling, along with his interests in influence and sales.

Reflecting on the early stages of building his freelance copywriting business, ‘Kevin the Copywriter’, he recalls the excitement of embracing the new challenges that entrepreneurship would bring. Perhaps the biggest of these initial challenges was transitioning from the security of a fixed paycheque to managing his company’s finances. Kevin explains, “Adapting from receiving a fixed paycheque in the bank every month to invoicing clients and ensuring payments came in on time, was a significant adjustment.”

As a solopreneur, Kevin went from the familiar environment of ‘performing very well at one job’ to a new world that saw him needing to ‘juggle multiple roles on a daily basis’. This involved learning new skills in areas like client management, business administration, finance, and more. It took a lot of determination, perseverance, and learning, but the (then) young entrepreneur would eventually pick up the skills he needed to excel at running a freelance copywriting business.

In response to these exciting challenges, Kevin’s business practices evolved from ad-hoc approaches to highly systemised methods that now enable him to manage multiple projects, clients, copywriting tasks, finance-related matters, suppliers, and much more – delivering successful projects and excellent work to clients, reliably and consistently.

A Holistic Approach to Copywriting

As a freelance copywriter and entrepreneur, Kevin has found success for well over a decade now.

What makes his copywriting services stand out, even in Singapore’s crowded creative space? It’s his unique formula for fusing writing with psychology and persuasive sales techniques – and delivering all this, through compelling advertising copy.

Kevin’s deep immersion in psychology and communication enables him to create compelling and insightful content – and by leveraging insights from these fields, he crafts persuasive copy that resonates with clients’ target audiences, compelling them towards action (whether that action is to make a purchase, register for an event, join a mailing list, or something else).

This holistic approach extends beyond mere words on a page. Kevin’s expertise in psychology and communication allows him to engage deeply with clients, capturing the essence of their brand messaging and objectives with exceptional nuance. By understanding the underlying emotions and aspirations driving client goals, Kevin ensures that the words he uses authentically connects with audiences – fostering emotional connections that inspire action, while also cultivating brand affinity and loyalty.

A Suite of Complementary Creative Services

Alongside copywriting services, Kevin the Copywriter also offers website development and creative design services. These complementary services are rooted in Kevin’s work experience before he transitioned into entrepreneurship – where he built a career at a Singapore-based creative agency as the company’s primary copywriter, and one of their project managers.

By leveraging his expertise in project management, Kevin ensures that clients’ copywriting and design requirements are seamlessly integrated, resulting in cohesive and impactful creative campaigns – and saving them the hassle (and risk) of working with multiple vendors (i.e., a copywriter, web developer, and designer) when executing their marketing plans.

The Importance of Adaptability (for Entrepreneurs)

Kevin’s approach to running a successful business is rooted in adaptability. In his opinion, “Business is always changing, often in unexpected ways. While it’s good to have a five- or ten-year plan, I believe it’s even more important to be adaptable – and have the flexibility to change things up quickly, so we can deliver what our customers want in the moment.”

Continuing, Kevin says, “This means prioritising skill development and service refinements, and having a mindset that’s open to change.”
